Red Bellies Racing - Australian Offshore Powerboat Racing at it's finest

MEDIA RELEASE - Tuesday, 27 March 2007

RED BELLIES RACING GET NZ CAMPAIGN BACK ON TRACK

Australian team Red Bellies Racing's confidence has been buoyed by a trouble-free run in round five of the 2007 New Zealand Offshore Powerboat Series at Tauranga on Saturday.

Firmly putting mechanical problems which hampered their efforts in the preceding rounds behind them, Bruce Sanders and Colin Craven were right in the thick of the Superboat Light class action, eventually taking fourth place.

"It was a flat-water, flat-out race the whole way," Sanders said.

"All of the Superboat Light boats were running in really close company, and everyone was trying to catch the boat ahead of them.

"In our case, we were sitting on 102 miles per hour for the whole race, with the boats ahead of us on pretty much the same pace.

"At the end of the race, everyone was within half a lap of each other, so it was a good strong battle within the class."

The result ended the team's run of misfortune from the first four rounds of the series.

"It seems that we've finally been able to iron the bugs out of the boat after the Taupo crash," Sanders said.

"That was the first time all season that we've been able to run the full race distance at racing speed.

"Our pace was also satisfying, we made some changes to the boat before this round and it was the strongest the boat has ever been."

With three rounds remaining, the team will continue development on the Red Bellies Racer, working to improve corner exit speed ahead of round six to be held at Napier on April 14.

"Together with Dunrite, we're importing some new propellers from America," Sanders said.

"At the moment, our top speed is on par with the other boats in our class, but we are losing some ground coming out of corners.

"The new propellers will give us more speed coming out of the corners and help us reach maximum speed a lot quicker, which will all help in the remaining races."

Red Bellies Offshore Racing is supported by Seabreeze Hotel, Barwil Unitor Ships Service, Mainlube, Always Stainless, Watersports Marine, Total Fencing Solutions, Steve Cotton Painting, Hosting Impact and Argo Engineering.

When not racing offshore powerboats, Bruce Sanders heads the Sanders Group, based in New South Wales' Nelson Bay, which owns and manages several hotels and motels in the region, including the Seabreeze Hotel.

In 2006, Seabreeze Hotel was awarded 'Hotel of the Year', by the Australian Independent Liquor Group, in recognition of the hotel's high quality management, facilities and services.
